Many people heard of the Basir Cane Corso. Many people claim this dog was the perfect example of the breed. But what is the truth about Basir?

If you know the real Cane Corso history, then you know already that Cane Corso had a problem with the look, but not with the temperament. It was the “breed” for the working purpose only, but with a very different look in specimens. Even the two dogs do not look like the same breed. Until the 80s when Italians started the Cane Corso breed recovery program in 1987 and most thanks to Mr. Dr. Antonio Morsiani.

I will share exclusive information about this dog which is one of the prototypes for the standard proportions which will be accepted on a provisional basis by the FCI 9 years later, in 1996.

How Basir was important for the Cane Corso breed and does he was a perfect quality?!

Let’s reveal the truth about Basir Cane Corso.

Basir Cane Corso

The prototype is the term we all use when we talk about the Cane Corso breed. But it’s crucial for understanding the further text, what means the prototype?

A basic version of a dog from which other dogs are developed is called a prototype.

The prototype does not mean a perfect quality dog but is the model with many qualities people than will use to write the Cane Corso breed standard.

Basir Cane Corso – the protopye of the breed

With well-explained and understood term prototype in this context, next to the other dogs which are used as prototypes. Basir Cane Corso shows the many qualities people used to write the standard we have today. But again, he was not the only dog they used for the standard writing, there were many. With further explanation, I will show you that Basir Cane Corso was not the perfect quality dog.

Here is the document from 1983. which is something like a biometrical tracking card. Which is part of the breeding examination nowadays – measurement of the dog.

This “breeding examination” of Basir Cane Corso was done on October 16th, 1983. Almost exactly the 3 years of Basir’s age. He was born on October 24th, 1983.

Basir Cane Corso

Proportions of Basir Cane Corso measured, in English:

Weight: 44kg / 97 pounds
Height at withers: 64cm / 25.2 inches
Body length: 68 cm / 26.8 inches
Height of legs to elbow: 34 cm / 13.4 inches

  • Basir Cane Corso

Head length: 20.5 cm / 8.1 inches

Skull length: 12.5 cm / 4.9 inches
Muzzle length: 8 cm / 3.1 inches

Skull width: 14.8 cm / 5.8 inches
Muzzle width: 7.5 cm / 2.95 inches

Now, this shows us a lot about its exterior quality. Head length was almost of ideal size compared to the height at withers. We can notice that he has a longer muzzle than today’s standard require. Instead of 34%, Basir Cane Corso had 39% muzzle length of the total head length. Also, he has a bit wider head than required. The width of the muzzle is almost perfect in quality with an almost perfect square shape of the muzzle.

He was a bit taller on his legs than Cane Corso should be, as the length of the legs goes over 50% of total height at withers. His eyes were not of such quality due to droopy lower lids. But with this body structure, his size, height, and weight, probably he was a very agile dog that can do hard working tasks.

Basir Cane Corso was not the only dog used to be a prototype for the breed standard, but the Italian team took the number of dogs that were similar in type and were prototypes. They used many dogs and the average measurements of them all are written as the proposal for the Cane Corso standard. This is how the standard was created and later accepted by FCI and AKC associations, but also other associations worldwide.

Now the facts!

The date of acceptance on a definitive basis by the FCI is May 21st, 2007.

The Cane Corso breed was recognized by the AKC in 2010.

This information is officially taken from the FCI and AKC websites. Nobody can lie to you about this anymore. The truth about quality and history, if nowhere, you will find here, in Cane Corso Spunk Gang home.

Knowing the truth about the breed, and understanding quality in the proper way is the only right way to breed and make quality Cane Corsos with quality selection as we do with our Cane Corso breeding program and bloodline!
