The trend nowadays is the colors of dogs. While accepted colors should make the dogs valuable if we compared them to some non-recognized colors. It still makes a Cane Corsos purebred but not valuable, for example, straw color and carbon color. But some of the non-recognized colors do not make a Cane Corso purebred, as the merle pattern is. This time I will talk about Cane Corso formentino and how to recognize this color!
The truth about Cane Corso formentino color!
All of you know, when we talk about black, brindle, straw dogs, etc, which are those colors. Do you ever ask yourself what is the formentino color? Let me explain this.
Due to the origin of the Cane Corso which is Italian, the Cane Corso formentino and this color is Italian slang which means a mix of the fawn and grey color. The name Formentino is Italian for “fermented wheat” which implies the color of their coat. This is essentially a washed-out fawn Cane Corso that has a grey mask on the muzzle.
In general, Cane Corso formentino is a part of the fawn color, acceptable as lighter or darker, and have a grey mask which not go beyond the line of the eyes. Described by the Cane Corso standard as dark wheat color, too.
The difference between fawn and formentino are:
- Fawn dogs are lighter fawns or darker fawns with black masks.
- Formentino dogs are a lighter or darker mix of fawn and grey colors with a grey mask.
A grey mask on the muzzle does not make this dog a Cane Corso formentino.
This photo will show you a perfect example of the difference, even though these are Cane Corso puppies. On the left is a fawn color puppy and on the right is a formentino color puppy. Not only the color of the mask but check the color of the body, too.
Now the difference in adult dogs!

Due to the fact, Spunk Gang does not have a Cane Corso formentino dog. I went and ask my friend Orel Ben Simon ( thank you 🙏 ) from Israel to allow me to use her beautiful Cane Corsos as great examples of the breed so I can make this article available for the educational purpose for all the people who don’t know it yet but they want to learn.
